Where did helmet originate?

Helmets are protective gear worn by a motorcyclist, construction workers, and police among others at the time of duty. It is a safety clothing to protect the head from damage in case of a fall or an accident. In addition, the helmet prevents strong winds from reaching the eyes during riding, which can interfere with the rider’s vision and cause fatal accidents. Manufacturers have one or two helmets as a clothing that accompanies the motorcycle. Some countries have strict rules on wearing a helmet, when the traffic police find you without a helmet it is a criminal offense which can land you in jail or pay a hefty fine.

Helmets have been in existence since time immemorial, the only difference is the shape and modification because of dynamism in the fashion industry. Soldiers from Syria are believed to be the inventors of helmets. Though made of leather, they were used to protect the head from weapons and arrows from their enemy during war. Helmets are not just worn by riders but also construction workers, industry workers, and the police with the sole aim of protecting the engine of a human body – the brain.

Construction workers are prone to hitting by falling debris; helmets come in handy. In 1990, due to increase in demand for the helmets as a protective gear, manufacturers used hard plastic material and lined them with resin cloth to offer warmth for riders. The other users used plastic ones without any covering to enhance comfort.

The moment developer saw the demand for helmets they came up with different helmet models to accommodate the youth, children and the elderly because of the varied taste of fashion. A standard helmet for a rider must cover the entire head with space for the eyes with a transparent glass. When you just want to enjoy the sun during spring but still want to protect your head from injuries then a simple helmet in the shape of a cap will serve the purpose. You will be able to get fresh air and enjoy the sun while on the bicycle or a motorcycle while your head is covered against injuries.

Plastics, metal, and leather are the main material ideal for making helmets. The inner part is lined with fabric for a smooth feeling and reduce bruises due to friction. The leather is not popular because of durability and the cost. Plastics are readily available for the low and middle-income earners. The police use helmets to prevent head damage during riots.

There are many types of helmets according to the shape and the material used in the design. The culture of some races also determines the type of helmet worn by most of their citizens. Nations prone to civil war opt for a helmet with a longer backside to cover even the neck. Nations who use helmets for outdoor cycling activities prefer cap-like helmets for them to have a clear view of nature without compromising on their safety. The choice of a helmet depends on the purpose and the function of the protective gear.
